HSEE 2018 Overview

HSEEHSEE (Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination) is a national level entrance test conducted every year by Indian Institute of Technology Madras(IITM) for admission to the master programme offered by the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) of the Institute.

It is completely computer-based exam and is usually conducted in the second or third week of April in various cities across India.

The HSEE exam is conducted for M.A. programme at IIT Madras.

It is the only test which admits students to a five year integrated masters programme in humanities and social sciences subjects offered by an IIT.


HSEE 2018 Important Dates

This course offers candidates an interdisciplinary perspective of cultural foundations for the study of human relations in contemporary contexts. The course aims at offering a broader learning to engage in critical thinking and research on ideas. First, 2 years of the programme are common to all after that it branches out into two streams:-(i) Integrated M.A. in Development Studies (ii) Integrated M.A. in English Studies. HSEE 2018 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates applying for HSEE must have passed at least any one of the following qualifying examinations listed below:-

  • 12th class conducted by CBSE
  • Intermediate or 2 Pre-University examination recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.
  • The final examination of the 2-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the NDA
  • Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the NIOS with a minimum of five subjects.
  • Any Public School equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities.
  • S.C. vocational examination
  • General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London, Cambridge or Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level.
  • High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

HSEE 2018 Exam pattern

Type of questions– MCQ for Part I and Descriptive for Part II.

Time Duration assigned– 150 minutes for Part I and 30 minutes for Part II.


HSEE 2018 Syllabus

HSEE-2018 has two parts: Part I and Part II. Syllabus for Part 1 consists of English (25% marks of Part I), Analytical and Quantitative Ability (25% marks of Part I), and General Studies (in four sub-parts; 50% marks of Part I). Part II involves essay writing.

Part I:

(A) English

This section tests the candidate’s ability to understand and use standard English, and to appreciate the literary language. Questions are related to the following areas:

(i) Reading skills: Candidates will be required to read the given passage(s) that aim(s) to test their comprehension skills and answer the comprehension questions.

(ii) Vocabulary: This section is a test of vocabulary and the ability to understand meaning, structure and collocation of words.

(iii) Grammar: This section tests the candidate’s knowledge of English grammar, including sentence structure and usage, the use of tenses, verb patterns, articles, and active and passive constructions, etc.

(B) Analytical and Quantitative Ability

Numbers, Algebra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Calendar.

Data interpretation, Analytical reasoning, Logical reasoning, Brainteasers, and Patterns.

Basic Statistics – Average, Ratio and proportion, Age sums, Percentages, Profit and Loss, Simple and Compound Interest, Work and time, Discount, linear equations, elementary trigonometry.

(C) General Studies

Indian Economy

World Affairs

Environment and Ecology

Indian Society and Culture

Part II:

This section is descriptive based and candidates get a topic here to write in form of an essay. Topics are current affairs and general knowledge based.



HSEE 2018 Application Form

The application form for HSEE 2018 is available now on the official website. In order to apply, the candidates need to register first. To register, the candidates have to fill all the personal details such as  Name, Date of Birth, Email Address, Password, and Mobile Number. Once, the registration is done, the candidates will have to enter the Personal, Academic, Address, and Examination details.Fee details of the exam are given below:-

1.The examination fee for the female/SC/ST/PWD is Rs1200.

2.The examination fee for all other categories is Rs 2400.


HSEE 2018 Admit card

Admit card of the exam will be available on the official website of HSEE from the expected date as mentioned above.
