How to Prepare for Graduate Aptitude Test Engineering (GATE) 2024

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an All-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising of Faculty members from IISc, Bangalore and other seven IIT’s on behalf of the National Coordinating Board, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development.

This test is conducted for the admissions in Post Graduate Programmes (ME, M.Tech, MS, Direct PhD) in institutes like IITs and IISc etc with financial assistance offered by MHRD.

Eligibility :

  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Engineering/Technology (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after B.Sc./Diploma in Engineering/ Technology) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders in Architecture (Five years course) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Bachelor’s degree holders of a Four-year program in Science (B.S.) and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Master’s degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Holders of Four-year Integrated Master’s degree (Post B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology and those who are in the second or higher year of such programs.
  • Holders of Five-year Integrated Master’s degree or Dual Degree in Engineering/Technology and those who are in the fourth or higher year of such programs.
  • Holders of Five-year integrated M.Sc. or Five-year integrated B.Sc./M.Sc. degree and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE/ MHRD as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed Section A of AMIE or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

Marking Scheme :

  • The questions will be worth 1 or 2 marks.
  • 1/3 marks will be deducted for the questions carrying 1 mark while 1/2 marks will be cut for questions carrying 2 marks

Proper Syllabus :

  • Verbal Ability: English grammar, sentence completion, verbal analogies, word groups,
    instructions, critical reasoning and verbal deduction.
  • Numerical Ability: Numerical computation, numerical estimation, numerical reasoning and data
    interpretation.

How to Prepare :

1. Preparation starts the moment you understand the pattern of the exam mentioned above.

Go through the syllabus and try to find suitable books for the exam.

2. Know your weak points. It’s important because if you are not ignorant about your weak points, you are more likely to learn things better. When you understand your weakness, it’s easier to overcome it.

Work on the weak part of the syllabus. Practice more and give more time to your weak topic. Always make notes side by side and try revising them every day before starting with your studies.

3. Don’t feel ashamed of asking for advice. Go and look for people who can help you with the chores. Ask teachers or elders to help you clear out your doubts or to master a particular topic.

Take the online mock test and solve previous year question papers. It’s always an important thing to do so that you have a clear idea of the pattern and types of questions that you may find in the exams.

4. Take note on your diet and exercise. After all, if your body is not fit, no one can expect a healthy lifestyle. It all comes down to your food habits.

If you take proper diet and avoid caffeine, it will refresh your mind and will help you stay fresh and active.

For better concentration and more output, exercise is a must. It will only take 30 minutes from your day and you will notice changes in yourself.

5. Don’t lose hope. Work hard and don’t be afraid of failures. If you give your best every time, nothing can go wrong.

There are simple tips to focus on while preparing for any competitive exam. If you go through the right kind of syllabus and study time table, every exam is easy to crack.

Since you have a year to prepare, give sufficient time to every subject and concept and don’t ignore anything. Cover as much syllabus as you can.

Keep an eye on your daily routine habits of eating and drinking and give time to exercise. You will soon reach success.
